Golden Gate Bavarian Club

Bayerischer Heimat- und Trachtenverein

The mountain region of southern Bavaria holds deep and time-honoured traditions. They include regional dialects, costumes, dances and music. The members of the Golden Gate Bavarian Club, as a not-for-profit corporation, preserve these values and pass them on to future generations by performing for audiences in San Francisco, Oakland and the greater Bay Area.

it’s quite popular here!  With fresh fruit in abundance, making jams and marmalade is somewhat of a given. I, however, had never attempted this back in CA.  I had a lot of learning to do!  Thank goodness for Amazon.  I was able to order my first book, which provided me with excellent instruction and explanations of the various methods of preserving foods (both Water Bath and Pressure Canning, Freezing, Drying/Curing).  My biggest hurdle was coming to terms with, “…but we have done it this way in Bavaria for generations!” and, “…but the USDA says…!”  I have come to a happy medium and make all the jams and marmalade according to the old Bavarian way, using new tools.  The other foods that I have created I am using the USDA methods.  So far, I have put up Cherry Jam, Cherry Chutney, Pear and Thyme Conserve, Orange-Rhubarb Marmalade, Johannisbeere Jelly, Dilled Green Beans, Dill Pickles, Zesty Peach Grill Sauce, Spiced Peaches, BBQ Sauce, Chicken Broth, and Marinated Red Peppers.  I think I’m now officially addicted!  What I’ve learned reaches beyond the technical knowledge.  I’ve learned how to watch the weather and the seasonal changes, how to live through the disappointment of a meager harvest, and the frustration of not harvesting everything while I could (and just cook for a week) to then suffer several days of bad weather which destroyed everything remaining on the tree.  Thankfully, another Spring will come.  Next year I’ll be ready! - jenna

Das Leben auf’m Land- SONNWENDFEUER

(June 21) On the longest day of the year, a bonfire is lit to mark the summer solstice.  Our local boys club was in charge of collecting the wood and building the pile of brush to burn.  No fire department standing by, just the entire village enjoying the summer evening. Kids were running about the fields while the adults enjoyed a time to visit with all the neighbors.

On August 27th we open our doors to all persons interested in learning more about our club! Wanna try out Bavarian folk dancing? Have questions about our clothing? Wonder about all the places where we travel? Then come by for a no-cost/ no-pressure evening of food and fun!

Hosted by Golden Gate Bavarian Club

Location: Alameda Elks Lodge, 2255 Santa Clara Ave. Alameda

Hi, I'm going to be in SF in June. Is there any event already planned? I am from Garmisch, originally, therefore I usually wear the Tracht almost every day... Please let me know. Thx / Werner

Hi Werner, at this time, aside from our regularly scheduled Plattlerprobe and Stammtisch, we do not have any special activities planned. I encourage you to join our Meetup group where all activities are listed.

This past weekend, our Verein was honored to be the host of the first ever Bezirksfest for Trachtenvereine west of the Rocky Mountains. Guests from as far north as Vancouver BC, south to Anaheim, CA, and east to Munich GER, all gathered for a weekend of dance competition, educational workshops, and a banquet dinner. These photos are the lovely gifts we received. The first, a hand painted Schnappsbrettl showing a couple wearing our blue and gold Festtracht; the second, a souvenir stein from the Fahnenweihe of Enzian Seattle which we attended last year; and third, a set of steins bearing an original drawing which shows the landmarks of the four founding Vereine for the Bezirk- Anaheim, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and San Francisco. I am still amazed by the thoughtfulness and generosity. (Hmmm now we really DO need a cabinet to store and display these lovely gifts.

Exciting news came out of our Annual Meeting this past week!  During this year’s elections, we selected AnnMarie Mittelbuscher to be our Verein’s first Jugendleiterin (Youth Leader).  She will direct the activities of our growing group of children in the club, teaching them songs and games designed to increase their knowledge Bavarian culture and language, as well as organizing fun outings.   Congratulations AnnMarie!!

Thanksgiving is one of the greatest holidays we have here in America. All persons, regardless of age, gender, race, etc., are together with their family and friends enjoying a sumptuous feast.   Let us all be thankful for the blessings in our lives and remember those who are far away and not able to be with us today.

Happy Thanksgiving!
